Strategic National Stock Pile
Strategic National Stock Pile-(SNS) Maine Specific Information
A terrorism event or Public Health crisis in Maine or neighboring areas, involving a chemical nerve agent, may produce numerous casualties which require urgent treatment. Unlike many other chemical or biological agents, which may not produce ill effects for hours or days, the time frame for an effective response to a nerve agent attack is measured in minutes. In an event of any magnitude, local medical supplies and resources could quickly be committed and consumed. A program created by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has placed nerve agent antidotes in communities all over the country to support a quick response to a nerve agent attack. Maine has located containers throughout the state to assure and enable an efficient and timely response to a chemical or biological event. Maine CDC is the State of Maine SNS lead. Ongoing planning activities bring all the key partners together as part of Maine’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response efforts. SMRRC is involved with exercise planninng and drilling to test the capabilities and plans for response among hospitals and community partners at all levels in our region and statewide. Specific locations where antidotes are stored are not disclosed to the general public in order to assure the ability to protect these sites from risk and to assure a timely and effective deployment to any and all affected areas. Both Public and Private Points of Dispensing (POD) are going to be pre set up across our region and will be the primary means of getting those medications out to the public and private organizations.
